About the SIA Door Supervisor Refresher Course

From 1 April 2025, this refresher course became mandatory for all Door Supervisors who want to renew their SIA licence.

The refresher course covers two main units:

1. Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor (Refresher)

Topics include:

  • Updated laws and professional responsibilities
  • How to carry out safe and effective searches
  • Safeguarding vulnerable people
  • Counterterrorism awareness (including ACT e-learning)
  • How to deal with incidents such as drink spiking

2. Physical Intervention Skills (Refresher)

Topics include:

  • Handling aggressive behaviour safely
  • Health and safety best practice

Assessment & Examination

Theory Exam

  • 35 multiple-choice questions
  • 55 minutes
  • Pass mark: 32 out of 40 (71%)
  • Supervised under exam conditions

Practical Assessment

You must show you can:

  • Use physical intervention skills safely
  • Manage conflict situations
  • Apply safe techniques correctly

You must pass both theory and practical to receive your certificate.

Examination Resits

  • No pass – no retake fee ( free retakes)
  • Pass rate is over 95%
  • Results available same day

Refund Policy

  • Full refund if cancelled within 24 hours of booking
  • No refund after 24 hours

SIA Licence Renewal Information

Your SIA licence does not renew automatically.

You must apply for renewal if you want to keep working.

Reasons you may not be approved:

  • A new criminal offence
  • Changes in SIA licensing rules
  • Expired licence (you must apply as a new applicant)

Background Checks

The SIA will:

  • Check your identity again
  • Run a criminal record check
  • Possibly ask you to visit a UK Post Office for ID verification

When to Apply

  • You can apply 4 months before your licence expires
  • Applying early does not shorten your licence
  • Any remaining time is added to your new licence

  • Some applicants may get a 50% discount if they already hold another active SIA licence
