About the CCTV Operator (Public Surveillance) Course

This course is for anyone who wants to get an SIA CCTV Operator Licence and work in public space surveillance. It follows the official SIA training requirements and is supported by Skills for Security and the SIA.

Getting the Level 2 CCTV qualification is the first step to applying for your SIA licence.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is for people who want to:

· Work in a CCTV control room

· Monitor public areas

· Identify people using CCTV systems

You must be 18 or older and meet SIA eligibility rules.

What You Will Learn

The course is split into two units.

Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry

You will learn:

· What the private security industry does

· Laws that apply to security work

· Basic arrest procedures

· Emergency procedures

· How to communicate clearly

· How to keep records

· How to respond to terror threats

· What to do after an incident

Unit 2: Principles & Practices of Working as a CCTV Operator

You will learn:

· The purpose of CCTV systems

· Roles and responsibilities in a control room

· Laws affecting CCTV operations

· Why operational procedures are important

· How CCTV systems and equipment work

· How to respond to different types of incidents

· Health and safety in CCTV environments

Assessment & Exams

You must pass two multiplechoice exams:

Unit 1 Exam

· 72 questions

· 1 hour 50 minutes

· Pass mark: 51

Unit 2 Exam

· 40 questions

· 1 hour

· Pass mark: 28

Exams take place online at the training centre.

Resits

· No pass – no retake fee (2 free retakes)

· Pass rate is over 95%

· Results available same day

You need an SIA licence if you use CCTV to:

· Monitor the public

· Identify a person

This includes CCTV used for recording images that are later viewed.

Two Types of Licence

· Front-line licence – for CCTV operators

· Non-front-line licence – for managers/supervisors

Requirements

You must:

· Be 18+

· Pass an identity check

· Pass a criminal record check

· Hold the CCTV qualification
